If you really are Indonesian people, you will surely confused when someone ask you to send them one thing to represent your country, Indonesia. As we all know, Indonesia has so many cultures that I myself, as Indonesian person, do not know how many exactly Indonesian cultures are. With so many islands here in Indonesia, it ensures us that there are too many kinds of cultures Indonesia has. Each is different. The cultures in Sumatra are different with the cultures in Java. Even in Sumatra itself, it has more than one even ten cultures. So does with Java Island. The cultures of Java are totally different with them of Papua. To think that Indonesia has thousands islands, 33 provinces, and many more, surely Indonesia has so many things to be presented to all over the world. No wonder if we are confused to choose which one is the best thing to send.
Now, even after I choose to focus on one kind of Indonesian cultures, which is dances, I still confused which dance I have to choose. There are so many typical dances in every province. Lenggang Jali dance from Jakarta, Piring dance from West Sumatra, or Jaipong from West Java. But after thinking for so long, I finally choose Saman dance to represent my country.
Saman dance is a very unique dance I have ever seen in the world. The dancer takes a sit position when they do the dance. And the hands of the dancers are somehow seems like crossing each other in a particular harmony. For this reason, it is also known as “Thousand Hands” dance.
Until now, when I watch Saman dance, it is still amaze me. How can they do that, tapping their hands like that, moving their head from right to left, and those many things? It must be hard thing to do. So far, when the foreigners watch the dance, they also are amazed. They also wonder about the crossing hands. They give us their highest appreciation. Truly Saman dance is the best thing to be presented to all people in all over the world.
